Can Green Tea Burn Belly Fat?

There are many claims about the benefits of green tea, including the claim that it can help metabolize or burn fat. This particular claim creates interest in diverse group of people. But is it true? Does green tea really help burn belly fat?

The Problem With Belly Fat

Many people trying to lose weight specifically want to know how to burn belly fat. There are a couple reasons for this. One reason is simply because of looks.

Most people want a tone, firm stomach, but even people who are in relatively good shape sometimes struggle with that stubborn belly fat. Usually in this case the concern is about the subcutaneous fat that is stored just beneath the skin. As many people know burning belly fat can be difficult and this is a trouble area for a lot of people.

The other reason is because belly fat, or fat in the abdominal area, is considered to be particularly unhealthy because it is often a risk factor for diabetes and heart disease. This type of fat is known as visceral fat. It’s stored deeper in the abdomen around the internal organs.

Can Green Tea Burn Belly Fat?

A study published in The Journal Of Nutrition in February 2009 states that green tea along with exercise can help burn belly fat.

The study involved 132 overweight adults. All the participants ate a diet with the same amount of calories and they all engaged in 180 minutes a week of moderate-intensity exercise.

All the participants were all given a beverage containing 39 milligrams of caffeine, but only some of the participants were given a drink that also contained 625 milligrams of catechins (considered one of the most powerful antioxidants abundant in green tea). For many getting this amount of catechins requires taking a green tea supplement or a liquid extract.

At the end of the 12-week study the participants who were consuming the drink with the green tea catechins had lost more weight. They lost 4.4 pounds versus the control group who only lost an average of a little over 2 pounds.

Beyond losing more weight, the group with the catechins added to their drink lost more total abdominal fat, subcutaneous fat and they lowered their triglyceride levels.

It seems you can reduce belly fat with green tea if you use it along with a healthy exercise routine and if you are getting the right milligrams of catechins. Of course drinking green tea alone, without changing your eating or exercise habits, won’t make the pounds magically melt away, but when used with a healthy diet and a regular exercise routine green tea may be able to help burn belly fat better than diet and exercise alone.

The way green tea works in this respect isn’t fully understood, but researchers believe it increases the rate fat is broken down in the body.

So after your next workout drink some green tea to quench your thirst, or if you’re in a hurry you may try a quality mega green tea pill; especially if you’re trying to decrease stomach fat to get those six pack abs, simply look better or if you are trying to improve your health.
